Johann Gottfried Steffan<\/strong> (* 13. Dezember 1815 in W\u00e4denswil; \u2020 16. Juni 1905 in M\u00fcnchen) war einer der bedeutendsten Schweizer Landschaftsmaler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er geh\u00f6rt zu den bekannten Vertretern der M\u00fcnchner Schule.<\/p>

Nach einer Lehre als Schriftlithograf in seiner Heimatgemeinde reiste Steffan 1833 zur weiteren Ausbildung nach M\u00fcnchen. Er besuchte die dortige Akademie der bildenden K\u00fcnste unter Peter von Cornelius. Unter dem Einfluss von Carl Rottmann wandte er sich der realistischen Landschaftsmalerei zu. Steffans Atelier wurde zum Mittelpunkt der Schweizer K\u00fcnstler in M\u00fcnchen. In seinem Atelier arbeitete u.a. Arnold B\u00f6cklin. Mit zahlreichen Kollegen \u2013 darunter Rudolf Koller \u2013 unternahm er Studienreisen in die Schweizer Alpen, bevorzugt ins Glarnerland und an den Walensee. In sp\u00e4teren Jahren besuchte er vermehrt Berchtesgaden und die Ramsau, wo er viele seiner Motive fand. Steffans Bilder sind idealisierte Landschaften der M\u00fcnchner Schule, bevorzugt Gebirgsdarstellungen. Mindestens ein Drittel stellen Voralpen-Landschaften dar.
